If you’re not yet familiar with Claire Foy, you soon will be. Having starred in dramas Little Dorrit and Upstairs Downstairs and been earmarked for stardom by trend bible Vogue, she’s currently starring in a Hollywood blockbuster with Nicolas Cage, Season of the Witch. But it’s her latest role, in Peter Kosminsky’s new drama The Promise, that has made the biggest impact on Foy.
She plays Erin, an 18-year-old visiting Israel for the first time. She’s following in the footsteps of her grandfather Len, a soldier in the British army in Palestine during the Mandate period who kept a diary of his turbulent time there.
It’s a powerful tale of love, war and betrayal, telling the stories of both Erin and Len – two young people caught up in the same struggle more than 60 years apart.
Here, Foy reveals her passion for the project, and explains why she’d like to burn every costume she’s ever worn.
What was it that drew you to The Promise?
I remember the very first audition very clearly. I got sent 25 scenes, and was asked to prepare all of them, which is what Peter does, God love him. It was so much work.

Written by BAFTA award-winning Director Peter Kosminsky (Warriors and The Government Inspector), The Promise is an inspiring depiction of political injustice experienced in modern day Israel and the old state of Palestine in the Second World War.
Claire Foy (Little Dorrit) and Christian Cooke (Cemetery Junction) lead an international cast, including Itay Tiran (Lebanon), Haaz Sleiman (The Visitor), Ali Sulaiman (Paradise Now) and Perdita Weeks (Lost in Austen), in Peter Kosminsky’s new four-part drama serial, released on DVD and Blu-ray on 28th February. Claire Foy reveals how she identified with her latest role as a stroppy teenager in this week’s TV Choice.
Feb 01, 2011 – Claire plays spoilt Erin, 18, who travels to Israel with her friend Elizar in Channel 4’s The Promise. But Erin starts to change when she reads her grandfather’s diary about his experiences in the British peacekeeping force in Palestine at the end of WWII.
‘Erin thinks the world’s against her,’ explains Claire Foy, who spent 10 weeks filming in Tel Aviv.
‘I could appreciate what she was like because I was like her when I was 18. Looking back I was awful, just so moody. I’m worried that my mum’s going to see this and think, “Oh my God, the bitch is back.”’

I want to be an actress not a celebrity I don’t want to get involved with that whole circuit, it’s not me. I’ve been to a couple of red-carpet events; everyone’s taking your photo, and you know one person there. It feels strange, like arriving at a party with no friends in sight. Why would you do that?
I embarrass myself on a daily basis Particularly after I’ve had a glass of wine. All of a sudden I think that what I have to say is really important, so I end up telling people how to run their lives. I’m lucky that my friends know me well enough to say, “Claire, shut up.”
I feel very lucky I’ve worked in supermarkets, put tags in baseball caps and provided security during Wimbledon, but I never thought acting would be something I’d be any good at, or make a living from. Read the rest of this entry »

Peter Kosminsky is one of Britain’s most acclaimed directors of hard-hitting television drama. His latest project – 11 years in the making – tells the story of postwar Palestine and Israeli independence through the eyes of a British soldier serving in the territory. It promises to be an event.
In 1999, shortly after his film about the British peace-keeping force in Bosnia, Warriors, was screened by the BBC, Peter Kosminsky received a letter. It was from an old soldier, who had found Warriors moving, and wanted to thank its director. At the end of the letter, though, was a line – thrown out more in hope than expectation – that caught Kosminsky’s eye. “You should do a film about the British soldiers who were in Palestine,” it said. “No one remembers us.” Read the rest of this entry »

Whilst attending the after party for her latest blockbuster, Season of the Witch, British actress Claire Foy was dressed to impress in Yigal Azrouel dress in New York on Tuesday.
Proving that long lengths are sticking around for yet another season, the rising young star rocked the formal floorlength gown, complete with a contrasting sheer white upper body and statement black waistband – not to mention a seductive thigh high split – with an air of effortless elegance and a subtle sexiness to boot.
And teaming her look with black accessories, Foy certainly knows how to turn pared-down minimalism into one massive style statement – and with a slick of vibrant red lippy, this British beauty proves she’s got what it takes in the style stakes.
So keep your eyes peeled for this up-and coming-fashionista – she’s definitely one to watch for 2011.

Earlier this week I got a chance to go to the press conference for the new supernatural thriller, “Season of the Witch,” with actors Nicolas Cage, Ron Perlman, Claire Foy, Robert Sheehan, and Stephen Campbell Moore. Aside from actors being covered in bacon and attacked by wolves, I’d really like to know more about Ron Perlman’s hotel habits. I never thought I would, but I do.
This film is rooted in the time of the Crusades. What themes in the film do you think are relevant to today?
Nicolas Cage: I think there are enormous parallels to be made in politics and religion, but I don’t want to draw them. I’ll leave it up to you guys to sort that out.
Ron Perlman: Very, very good answer. Read the rest of this entry »
